Rules of the Sport & Elite Wrestlers

Learn the fundamentals of high school wrestling and recognize some of the most accomplished women in the sport.

High School Wrestling Rules

Matches consist of three 2-minute periods.
Wrestlers compete within designated weight classes.
Points are scored for takedowns (2), escapes (1), reversals (2), and near-falls (2–3).
A match can be won by pin (fall), technical fall (15-point lead), major decision, or decision.
Illegal moves include striking, slamming, or any action that endangers an opponent.

High school competition follows guidelines established by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA).
